globally organized. He emphasized that the awareness was initiated by the
International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and World Health organization (WHO) as
far back as 1991 and ever since then the world diabetes day is celebrated
globally on the 14th of November every year. Diabetes according to
Dr. Onwurah is a metabolic disorder that can either be caused by inadequacy of
insulin production in the body or inefficiency of the insulin produced. Other
causes of diabetes include prescription drugs, endocrine disease, pancreatic
diseases as well as pregnancy induced. Dr. Ejim stated that diabetes can be
prevented but when one is affected by diabetes it does not have cure but can be
effectively managed to avoid complications which includes loss of sight,
numbness, poor wound healing and so on. Dtn. Mary Jane in practical terms was
able to illustrate that diet is very vital in prevention and management of
diabetes. In dietary management of diabetes the objective is bring the blood
sugar level of a diabetic to a near normal level and to either prevent or slow
down the occurrence of complications of diabetes. She advised participants that
are not diabetic to be very careful of what they eat as everyone is at
different levels of risk of being affected with diabetes. She advised that a
there is nothing like a diabetic diet and that the key to living a healthy life
is moderation in quantity of what one eats as well as weight control. The diet
for a diabetic patient she state is a high carbohydrate, high fibre and low fat
diet. Reactions and questions were taken by the participants. Prof. (Mrs.) Ngwu
